DW: So Laura, your big news is that you were recently accepted to Harvard Law School. Congratulations!

LP: Thank you! I’m looking forward to meeting different kinds of people and being exposed to different realms of information.

DW: How did you react when you heard you got in?

LP: Right after I received the acceptance phone call from Harvard, my mom told me that I had jumped up and down in exactly the same way when I got into Curtis. …

AK: So you’re speaking with me from Mexico; I’m jealous!

MM: Yes, I’m here with friends. We’ve been here for two weeks but I return to New York soon. I have a performance at an art gallery in a week, which will be my first performance in a year.

AK: Exciting! What have you been working on lately?

MM: I made a new album over the holidays — Chopin, with two Liszt pieces as bonus tracks.

AK: Your social media performances are so well…

AK: What made you want to return to Canada after graduating from Curtis?

AE: I moved to Philly to attend Curtis two weeks before 9/11 happened, so it was a strange time to be in the U.S. and took some adjustment. Canada is home. I was born in Montreal, which I love, but grew up in the suburbs of Toronto and Calgary. After eleven seasons playing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, I ended up back in Montreal where I now freelance.

AK: You received…

AK: You’re the principal flutist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Are you in Milwaukee now?

SS: Yes, I’m at home in Milwaukee, although I’m a New Yorker at heart. The pandemic has been the only time I haven’t wanted to visit even though my family is still there. I haven’t been back in over a year — it’s hard. It was important for me to come to the Midwest though, because beyond my job it opened my eyes to the disparities in this country…

AK: I was sorry to hear that your bass is in the hospital! How’s it doing?

XF: I put my bass down next to this radiator in an apartment, which caused the wood to lose moisture faster than normally. The brace on the back of the bass caved in and popped open.

AK: When will it be fixed?

XF: Well I live in New Jersey but the bass luthier who made my instrument is in Virginia, so I had to drive it there for…

AK: Where are you speaking with me from today?

IM: I’m in San Sebastián, a small city in northern Spain’s Basque Country. I haven’t been living in Spain for the past ten years but am originally from Galicia, which is in northwest Spain right above Portugal. It’s a close drive from San Sebastián so feels like I’m almost home!

AK: What is COVID-19 life like in Spain these days?

IM: Things change drastically from day to day. Right now there’s a travel restriction, so…

AK: You’re the first American expat I’ve interviewed! Do you miss us?

BG: Ha! I do miss my family. I used to miss certain brands of food but that’s improving with globalization. I miss American bars. I moved to Europe right after I graduated from Curtis in 2006 and never looked back. During my time as a student at Curtis, I spent summers doing a program in Amsterdam. I knew that I wanted to work full-time when I finished my studies, and that Europe…

AK: I admire how active you are with practice and performance on social media. Has the pandemic affected how you produce digital content?

AH: I’ve always had an affinity for social media, but now it’s more of a skill that I’m scrutinizing and really using to connect with people. I’m trying to figure out what my niche is in such a busy space. There are so many amazing classical musicians online, and I think the ones who are effectively reaching their audience are doing…

AK: Can Yoshi the dog make a cameo appearance today, and will you share his origin story?

MLC: Here’s Yoshi! He’s going to the groomer today for a much-needed refresher. Yoshi randomly showed up on my parents’ doorstep when I was back home in Marshall, Texas on May 1. I remember hearing a small dog barking outside my window — and keep in mind my parents live in the country where there are coyotes, owls, buzzards — and I thought, “This is not going…

AK: Where are you holding this Zoom call with me today?

GC: New York City. I’ve lived here for about five years. I love it a lot even though it’s of course gone through some changes this year.

AK: It seems like you’re staying busy despite the pandemic. Duende is one of your projects that I’m curious to hear more about.

GC: I have a lot of interests and get bored easily! With Duende it’s a meandering story, but I got involved playing a…
